London boasts improved candidate availability
The latest ‘Report on Jobs: London’ suggests this could be a great time to hire temporary workers.
While the overall permanent jobs outlook was ‘muted’, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG survey has revealed good news for recruiters: the number of available candidates has increased.
The June 2012 report demonstrated a second successive monthly improvement in the quantity of people seeking permanent jobs and a 22nd-month increase in the number of people searching for temporary jobs in London. Candidate availability in the City was greater than the UK average.
Although permanent placements fell, perhaps due to uncertainty during the Olympic Games, temp billings ‘eased’, according to the report. In fact, a separate survey by the REC found that 31 per cent of companies said the expected to make an increased amount of temporary hires made throughout the Games. Unsurprisingly, it is expected that temporary tourism jobs are likely to be plentiful at this time.
Additionally, 28 per cent said they would be increasing their ‘reliance on agency workers’ over the next 12 months which, freshbusinessthinking.com suggests, indicates the temp job market could be looking brighter in the long term.
REC chief executive, Kevin Green, was cautious, telling hrmagazine.co.uk: “There is still demand for workers and vacancies continue to rise. Recruiters tell us that employers are still hiring, but their increased sense of caution is manifesting in them taking longer to make decisions and to confirm hires.”
